Madonna's third album True Blue The third Madonna’s studio album was titled True Blue and released in June, 1986. This time Madonna still worked with Stephen Bray and began collaborating with Patrick Leonard. The third album’s songs used to have pop beats as well. But songs of this album were mostly written by Madonna herself, thus she became co-producer of her work. The album was released during the first year of Madonna and American actor Sean Penn’s mutual life. So Madonna dedicated True Blue to her husband, saying he was the “"the coolest guy in the universe”. The album included such hits as "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", "Open Your Heart" and others. The albums cover was shot by photographer Herb Ritts and those picture of Madonna’s profile became one of most recognizable Madonna’s pictures. The second single from True Blue album was Papa Don't Preach, which told about young pregnant girl who is talking to her farther. The song was written by Brian Elliot, besides, Madonna also added her lyrics. Papa Don't Preach became number one in different hit parades of US, Australia and the UK. The single was very successful and took top places in numerous charts: in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, US and many others. Later, in 2002, the song was recovered by Kelly Osbourne, who did it in a harder rock style. True Blue track is the combination of 1950s bubblegum pop combined with 1980s teen pop. The song took peak places in the US and UK. Madonna was one of its authors as well. She included it in her tour Who's That Girl World Tour of 1987. There was pressed a limited quantity of the single in blue vinyl. Though the song was rather popular in ‘80s later it was forgotten. Some critics suppose it happened because of Madonna’s divorce from Sean Penn as the song was dedicated to him. The fourth song from her album True Blue was Open Your Heart, which was created by Madonna, Gardner Cole, and Peter Rafelson. The song genre is rock and pop. Originally it had been written for Cyndi Lauper, but it was never played to her. Besides English version it also had a Spanish equivalent recorded by rock singer Melissa and released in 1986. Open Your Heart was successful in US, UK and Australia and got peak places there. Critics’ reports said that in True Blue Madonna’s voice became stronger in comparing to her previous albums. True Blue was called "sturdy, dependable, lovable new album". After the album release there was written in Rolling Stone, that Madonna was "singing better than ever, Madonna stakes her claim as the pop poet of lower-middle-class America”. It was new music and new Madonna – strong and independent. True Blue took top places in different charts. In 1986 it took Juno Award in Canada for Best International Album, in 1987 got 2 American Music Awards. It deserved many countries, where True Blue was on top places for several weeks and got excellent certification. 23 million copies of it were sold worldwide, thus True Blue became Madonna’s most successful album.
