Madonna’s fourth album Like a Prayer Madonna released her fourth studio album Like a Prayer in March, 1989. It included elements of statement at the time, incorporating rock, dance, pop, soul, and funk. The project was created with producing of Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray she used to work for a long time, besides Madonna recorded a duet with R&B pop singer Prince. Such singles as Like a Player, Express Yourself, Keep It Together and others were included in the album. Creating Like a Player album Madonna appeared as singer-songwriter, musician, producer, dancer, author and actress. Like a Player is the first single and title track of Madonna’s fourth album. Before the commercial release the Like a Player single was used by Pepsi Company in its advertising campaigny. And in 1990 Pepsi became a sponsor of Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour. The song was written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard and arranged by Andrae Crouch. Single was remixed several times and public heard it in different interpretations: dance, pop and gospel. Various artists worldwide such as Blue, H2O, Mad'House and John Wesley Harding remixed it. Madonna included Like a Player single in two of her tours: the Blond Ambition Tour of 1990, and The Re-Invention Tour of 2004. The music video for Like a Player was extremely controversial. Madonna played a role of a girl who became a witness of a crime and came to the church to pray. It attracted lot of criticism for its subplot. It was Mary Lambert why directed this music video; earlier she was also the director of Borderline, Like a Virgin, Material Girl videos. The second single from Madonna's multi-platinum selling album Like a Prayer became Express Yourself in pop/dance genre. In Japan and US single reached high positions, and in Europe it became number one and kept those position for three weeks. The song has a clear sense – the message for women never "go for second-best" and to put their love "to the test". USA certified it Gold. Express Yourself was remixed several times. Madonna opened her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990 with the Non-Stop Express remix of Express Yourself. Another song written and produced by Madonna in association with Stephen Bray was Keep It Together. For Stephen Bray and Madonna this song was the last collaboration work. In US Keep It Together achieved 8th position and became Madonna's eighteenth top-ten single. Keep It Together sounds pop rhythms flavored with an R&B beat and rhythm. The lyrics follow the idea of reborn of weak Madonna’s to Madonna-superstar. This song was rather popular in several countries and in US it got Gold certification. Like a Player was a rather successful project, Madonna sold about over 6 million copies in America and 17 million worldwide. The album got rank #100 on VH1's 100 Greatest Albums, #16 on Rolling Stone magazine's 50 Essential 'Woman and #237 on Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. On opinion of Time magazine (2006) Like a Player is in list of the All-TIME 100 Albums.
