Madonna’s ninth studio album released by in April, 2003 by Maverick Records was titled American Life. Madonna, Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Mark "Spike" Stent became album producers again. They worked together already on Madonna’s previous album Music. The album American Life sounded pop, electronica, rock and techno beats and became one more Madonna’s ambitious work.

The working title for the album was Hollywood, but later composers accepted the title American Life. The album recording took place at Sarm West Studios, Sony Music Studios UK, Olympic Studios, and others. Mixing was performed at Olympic Studios and at USA studios.

There was a time when people were interested in Madonna’s image, private life and provocative actions. Her music played the key role in that position of affairs. And again as all Madonna’s oeuvre the album American Life was controversial and gave rise to mixed feeling. Thanks to combination of acoustic and techno rhythms the album may be called a concept album. It was commercial and musical risk as Madonna touched war theme in her songs and videos.

The title track American Life appealed to pay attention to the questions of war. The cover of album was designed in a military style. Madonna was shot wearing a beret and looked like famous image of revolutionary Che Guevara. This photo shoot was done by photographer Craig McDean. The anti-war lyrics of the song were considered as unpatriotic step – Madonna criticized of the American lifestyle. Unlike that the song got public applause and became a dance hit in many countries peaking in Hot Dance Singles Sales and Hot Dance Club Play charts.

The debut single Die Another Day - a pop dance/ club play single – is the soundtrack to the upcoming "Die another Day" film. It was the most successful Bond theme-song since the 1980s, the pulse thumping and different to past Bond classics. It peaked in different charts and was actually rotated in numerous countries. Despite public admire critics’ opinion about this single widely varied.

The third single from the album was Hollywood. It failed to chart in the Hot 100. Thus it became Madonna's first single in twenty years, which was not included in this chart. And again anti-war message that was paid attention in the music video for the song became the stumbling block. Despite all ambiguousness of the single it was rather successful and found its listeners in numerous countries of the world. It reached a top-five in Argentina, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom and at the United World Chart.

American Life had the lowest sales of a studio album of all Madonna’s career, but she never suffered from this fact and used to say that this album is her favorite work. Despite all problems the album was fifth highest selling album of 2003 in the world.
