Madonna » Songs » Lucky Star

Lucky Star is another super hit released by pop singer Madonna in September, 1983. This single is one of main songs of Madonna’s debut album self-titled Madonna. It was created in collaboration with producer Reggie Lucas. Madonna tried herself in Pop/R&B style and this experience was successful. Originally the album had to be titled Lucky Star, after the track of the same name, but later the title was changed. So the album was presented to the public as Madonna.

Lucky Star became a great hit, charting in the Top 10 in many countries. Song’s words are famous by Mother Goose nursery rhyme "Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight..." The single Lucky Star is a classic example of the early 1980's music – this is "Madonna's classics".

The music video for Lucky Star was produced in 1984 and directed by Arthur Pierson. The one can see on it Madonna dancing with her dancers dressed black and white. Her brother Christopher and friend Erica Bell agreed to be those dancers. It’s strange for us, who knows Madonna as loving mother and pretty woman, but on those video Madonna looked like “Boy Toy” thanks to her wild haircut and black punk dress. Later she described that dress designed by designer Maripol as a “rags clothes”. In fact there were two variants of the video: the one produced in 1984 (described earlier) and the shorter version created for re-release of Lucky Star in 1990. Original cover of the Lucky Star single is one of the most famous Madonna’s pictures.

Lucky Star achieved peak positions in Australia, Canada and the UK. In US this single took place in Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, both Adult Contemporary and R&B charts. It kept good positions in the Top 10 for 5 weeks, in the Top 20 for 8 weeks, and in the Top 40 for 12 weeks. And while Lucky Star was climbing up, Madonna began working on her debut starring role in a feature film, Susan Seidelman's Desperately Seeking Susan.

Critics told about Madonna’s Lucky Star that Madonna was in fire there, she was effervescent, wild, having unmortified spirit. Lucky Star was remixed in the greatest hits The Immaculate Collection, 1990. But this version is not so widely known as the original one.

Madonna performed this single several times on her great concert tours, such as The Virgin Tour, 1985, Who's That Girl World Tour, 1987 and Confessions Tour, 2006.

Lucky Star had created “lucky Madonna”. Once again it had shown the world the talent of young singer, represented her own style and music philosophy. Partly thanks to this song Madonna sold worldwide several million copies of her debut album Madonna.
