Madonna » Songs » Angel

After the great success of Like a Virgin, Material Girl and Crazy for You songs Madonna became the big star. Million of teenage fans around the world fell in love with her and she wanted to deserve as much hearts as possible. The third single from Madonna’s studio album Like a Virgin was released in April, 1985 by Sire Records and titled Angel. Written by Madonna and Steve Bray and produced by Nine Rodgers this single is lesser known Madonna’s work.

The song begins with a catchy and light beat, and then Madonna giggles before beginning singing. The first phrase is very simple and short in the style of her early songs. Then Madonna is singing with chorus "Oooh...you're an Angel". The lyrics of the Angel song are very simple.

The B-side to Angel single was Into the Groove from Madonna’s film Desperately Seeking Susan. This song was not as successful as Angel. Though in Europe it was released separately from Angel in US Into the Groove never released as a single.

Angel was released in several countries, such as Australia, Canada, Spain, the UK and others, where it took peak positions. In Japan Madonna’s single Angel achieved position number 5 on Chart Japan, which is known as the Japanese Foreign Singles Chart. In Australia Angel/Into the Groove was the second highest selling single of the year. It peaked at No.5 in the UK and spent nine weeks on the chart.

Angel took peak positions in such charts as Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Adult Contemporary, Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singers & Tracks and others in U.S.

The music video for the Angel single was created as a combination of images from Burning Up, Borderline, Lucky Star, Like a Virgin and Material Girl videos by Warner Bros. That moment Madonna was too busy in America with her Virgin Tour, so producers decided to put up with a compilation of clips from Madonna's early videos. Madonna performed this song on her Virgin Tour in 1985 and on subsequent tours. Though the video was awful the song was very popular. And it is still interesting listening to it as its ever-young beats make hearts thrill with delight.
