Madonna » Videos » Die Another Day

The music video for Madonna’s single Die Another Day from her ninth album American Life was inspired by the James Bond movie of the same title. The clip directed by Swedish directing team Traktor continued the theme of brutal force which was began in one of Madonna’s previous videos for the single What It Feels Like For A Girl.

The video featured the macabre atmosphere of cheerless rooms, cruel overseers and Madonna with livid marks on the body. The black and white parts of her subconscious are fighting to each other symbolizing everlasting battle between evil and good. Creators used for this analogy scene similar to the fight scene between James Bond and Gustav Graves at the fencing school from early Bond film. Eventually white character conquers the enemy. Another shocking scene was an electric chair usage. The pictures of electrocution were blamed and figured in the final of the video, when hurt Madonna elbows way out and leaves a smoldering chair with a Hebrew statement "לאו" that can be read as "great escape" or "freedom," or one of the "72 Names of God," according to the Kabbalah.

Horrify and shocking Die Another Day video was criticized as noisy and repetitive. Its shooting had required more than $6 million USD cause of the intensive usage of special effects.
